Gold slips ahead of Fed decision; Iran diplomacy hopes in focus
Gold Prices Test $4,000 Support as Fed Decision and US-Iran Tensions Drive Market Uncertainty
Gold prices briefly fell below $4,000 an ounce as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s policy decision and monitored diplomatic efforts to ease US-Iran tensions. A stronger US dollar and persistent inflation concerns linked to elevated energy prices continued to weigh on bullion, while expectations for future interest-rate hikes kept markets cautious.
Gold Prices Under Pressure Ahead of Fed Decision
Gold prices came under renewed pressure on Tuesday, briefly slipping below the key $4,000-per-ounce level as investors assessed the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision and the latest developments in US-Iran diplomatic efforts.
At 07:18 ET (11:18 GMT), spot gold was down 0.1% at $4,011.92 an ounce, while US gold futures declined 0.3% to $4,025.15. The precious metal had gained 0.5% in the previous session before retreating as traders weighed the possibility that the Fed would leave interest rates unchanged on Wednesday.
According to analysts at Trade Nation, gold is testing a significant support level, similar to its movements in June and July. If this level holds, prices could stabilize. However, a sustained break below $4,000 could expose gold to further downside, potentially bringing the $3,500 level back into focus.
US-Iran Diplomacy Offers Some Relief, but Inflation Concerns Persist
Oil prices fluctuated around the previous session’s levels amid volatile trading, as renewed diplomatic efforts raised hopes of preventing further escalation in the US-Iran conflict.
Although progress toward easing geopolitical tensions could help reduce uncertainty in energy markets, gold remains vulnerable to inflationary pressures associated with persistently high energy prices. Rising oil prices can increase inflation expectations and make central banks more cautious about easing monetary policy.
This creates a challenging environment for gold. While geopolitical uncertainty can typically boost demand for safe-haven assets, concerns that elevated energy costs could keep interest rates higher for longer are currently weighing on the precious metal.
Fed Rate Outlook Remains a Key Market Driver
Market participants are closely monitoring the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement, with expectations largely favoring unchanged interest rates at this week’s meeting. Markets are pricing in roughly a 10% probability of a rate increase at the meeting, although persistent energy-price pressures have strengthened expectations of a possible hike before the end of the year.
Expectations shifted following hotter-than-anticipated US inflation data, which initially prompted traders to increase their bets on another rate hike. However, comments from central bank officials suggesting that further tightening may not be immediately necessary subsequently moderated those expectations.
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023 in September, making its upcoming decision particularly important for investors seeking clues about the direction of monetary policy.
Higher interest rates generally weigh on gold because the metal does not generate interest income. When yields rise, interest-bearing assets may become more attractive relative to bullion
