The US dollar strengthened on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as investors positioned for interest rate decisions from the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan. Currency markets focused on inflation risks, economic growth and signals about the future direction of monetary policy.

Improving sentiment towards artificial intelligence stocks helped stabilise broader markets, while concerns about France’s fiscal outlook weighed on the euro. The US dollar’s advance reflected both positioning ahead of the central bank meetings and weakness in major counterpart currencies.

Federal Reserve Guidance in Focus

The Federal Open Market Committee began its two-day meeting on Tuesday, with investors broadly expecting an unchanged policy rate when the decision was announced on Wednesday, U.S. time. Attention centred on whether policymakers would retain a preference for further tightening following stronger inflation readings.

A decision to hold rates would not necessarily settle the outlook for the US dollar. The policy statement and accompanying commentary could influence expectations for December, particularly if officials expressed concern about persistent price pressures.

Upcoming third-quarter gross domestic product figures and September Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation data were also in focus. Stronger growth or persistent inflation could reinforce expectations that borrowing costs would remain elevated, while weaker readings could temper those expectations.

Euro Pressured by French Fiscal Concerns

The euro weakened against the US dollar as investors assessed volatility in French government bonds and uncertainty surrounding France’s public finances. Elevated energy costs added to concerns about the region’s inflation and growth outlook.

Pressure on French debt highlighted the distinction between government borrowing costs and credit-risk premiums. Bond yields reflect both broader interest rate expectations and country-specific concerns, while yield spreads against benchmark German debt provide another measure of perceived sovereign risk.

The ECB was expected to leave policy rates unchanged at its Thursday meeting. Investors were watching for guidance on whether persistent inflation might require further tightening and how officials would assess financial market stress.

For EUR/USD, the balance between U.S. and euro area policy expectations remained important. A relatively firmer Fed outlook could support the US dollar, although the response would depend on how much tightening markets had already priced in.

Yen Retreats Ahead of Bank of Japan Meeting

The Japanese yen gave back part of its recent gains as concerns about AI-related equities eased. Its earlier strength had reflected demand for perceived safe-haven assets during a period of market uncertainty.

The Bank of Japan was expected to keep policy unchanged when its meeting concluded on Friday. Investors were seeking indications of whether domestic inflation and growth conditions could justify additional rate increases.

The bank’s assessment of underlying inflation would be particularly relevant. Evidence that price growth was becoming sustainably established around its 2% target could strengthen expectations for further policy normalisation.

USD/JPY could therefore respond to guidance from both central banks. A firmer BOJ outlook might support the yen, while expectations of persistently higher U.S. borrowing costs could favour the US dollar.

Domestic Developments Shape Other Currencies

Beyond the major currency pairs, the Israeli shekel’s performance reflected attention to national political developments and their potential implications for economic policy and investor confidence.

The Indonesian rupiah remained under pressure near historically weak levels. Bank Indonesia reiterated its commitment to using policy tools to support currency stability as investors assessed capital flows and external financial conditions.

These differing pressures illustrated why individual currencies can diverge even during a broader US dollar advance. Domestic politics, central bank credibility and cross-border investment flows can all influence exchange rates.

Market Outlook: Policy Expectations May Drive Forex Volatility

The US dollar entered the central bank announcements with support from positioning and euro weakness. The durability of that strength would depend partly on whether policymakers delivered guidance that differed from prevailing expectations.

A stronger emphasis on inflation risks could support expectations for tighter policy. More cautious commentary about economic growth could have the opposite effect, particularly if subsequent data showed weakening activity.

With several policy decisions concentrated in the same week, differences in central bank communication could increase volatility across EUR/USD, USD/JPY and other major pairs. Inflation trends, growth data and changes in expected interest rate differentials were likely to remain central to the US dollar outlook.
